Garrison State

© MMXII V.1.1.1
by Morley Evans

Another mass killing of school children this time. Why oh why does this happen?

The United States of America is a garrison state. The message that violence solves all problems is inculcated in everyone's mind from childhood on. In no other country is war and conquest such a part of the culture. Watch "White Christmas" or "It's a Wonderful Life". Even at Christmas the military is there, omnipresent with a friendly smiling face. Children play with war toys and violent video games. Adolescents are recruited, brutalized and turned into killers. They are sent overseas to fight America's endless wars. They kill, kill, kill for peace. "Killing will give you a big release." This is not new:

General Jack D. Ripper

"America's claim to virtuous hegemony is contradicted by the disasters inflicted on the world by America's arrogant and blundering leaders."
- Paul Craig Roberts

War and killing is so pervasive that banning guns would solve nothing. The way to solve problems, people are taught, is to kill someone. The way to avoid punishment and pain is to kill oneself.

President Obama, and most Democrats, favour gun control. They also favour the widening of police powers, the further militarization of the police, foreign espionage, domestic espionage, assassinations, the Department of Homeland Security, more money for the military, more money for military contractors, more and more efficient killing by unmanned robot aircraft (drones) armed with Hellfire missiles and someday with nuclear weapons, and the destruction of the United States Constitution and the law. The Republicans are worse, favoring all of the above plus "the right to bear arms" and possibly free ammo for all.

When I was a child, I watched Dan'l Boone and Davy Crockett, Gunsmoke, Lash Larue, The Rifleman, and Have Gun Will Travel. The United States produced sharpshooter Annie Oakley, Roy Rogers, and the man with no name, Clint Eastwood, A.K.A. "Dirty Harry". G.I. Joe was and is very popular. Star Trek was based on a Navy model. I Dream of Genie took place inside the U.S. Air Force. Sergeant Bilko made war funny. Bob and Bing made war cute. TeeVee and movies have gotten darker and more violent as each year has passed. Car chases, cold blooded murder and explosions have replaced movies like My Fair Lady which featured brilliant talent, uplifting messages and keen insights into human nature.

Mickey Spillane was tame. Here's the newest American hero, Jack Reacher:

Americans invented "modern living," the concentration camp, the rifle, the machine gun, the gatling gun, the revolver, the airplane, the submarine, the nuclear-powered submarine, the chain gun, the laser, the atomic bomb, the hydrogen bomb and whatever was used that turned the World Trade Center into clouds of micro dust on September 11, 2001. Fomenting hatred between rival groups is Washington's specialty. I could go on.

Killing goes on every day in Iraq. This is today's sample: Iraq Bloodbath: 92 Killed, 227 Wounded. Why didn't this happen in Iraq before we took over running things? Don't you think we are still running things there? We are running things everywhere.

Ho hum another mass killing. Why oh why does this happen?
