Downton Abbey, the brilliant British miniseries, broadcast in North America by PBS Masterpiece Theatre, encapsulates the transition of world hegemony from the British Empire — that had ruled the roost since the Seven Years' War (1756-1763) — to the empire of the United States of America which may be gasping its last as 2012 comes to an end.
